Facial Recognition is fast becoming the preferred technology

Facial Recognition in employee time clocks is proving to be the new standard for ease of use and recognition reliability.
The ideal method for identifying an individual is one which combines reliability with ease of use and security. Older technologies such as proximity cards and PIN's are very reliable, but from a security perspective, they are entirely unsuitable, particularly if you have time theft issues in the workplace.

Fingerprint readers are far too unreliable by comparison, and they often engender concern in the employees regarding the potential theft of their identity. They are prone to bad reads when employees work in dirty or harsh environments, and they require contact with the clocking device, so in some situations, they create concerns regarding hygiene.

Facial Recognition by comparison, ticks all the boxes.
It uses geometry to may the user's facial features - usually the eyes, nose and mouth. Each of these components can vary bewteen users in terms of the height, width and the relative position of each of these elements. Those variations in total are enough to form a very specific algorithm of the users face and identify one from another with relative ease.

Facial Recognition is contact less, fast and accurate and very secure.
A bonus is that it is not expensive - around the same price as a fingerprint time clock.

In terms of suitability for SME's in particular, the options of a stand-alone time clock or competent award interpretation are not currently available in facial recognition products. The good news is that if your company has more than 50 employees, then it is likely that a more capable attendance software product will be required. Many currently support facial recognition time clock products.

Facial Recognition time clocks start from around $1,300, including bundled time and attendance software. However, these entry-level systems do have some limitations in their calculation of accurate hours (see this article for a further explanation).

In larger organisations with more than 50 employees, it may be wise to invest in a more robust attendance system using Facial Recognition time clocks with a more refined  Award Engine. Usually, this will also add other features, such as leave management and export to a wide range of payroll products.


If your employee time recording requires upgrading Facial Recognition is a reliable and secure alternative to any of the other available technologies. However, as with most products, beware of products which are priced much lower than the rest of the field. Almost certainly these will be inferior both in terms of the accuracy of recognition and the flexibility of the accompanying software.
